A well-known LGBTQ activist in Michigan has been charged with setting their own house on fire in what appears to be a hate crime hoax.

54-year-old Nikky Joly’s house burned down in August of 2017, killing his five pets inside. The FBI investigated it as a hate crime, but now believe it was arson and consider Joly to be the prime suspect.

As a transgender activist, Joly was known for his efforts in launching an LGBTQ community center and getting an anti-discrimination ordinance passed. But people who worked with him say Joly was disappointed that LGBTQ issues weren’t getting enough attention.
