Woman Celebrates ‘Pi’ Day By Breaking Record

March 14th, aka 3.14, is known as ‘Pi Day’. And one woman is taking the celebration farther than it’s ever gone before.

Emma Haruka Iwao, a Google engineer, just broke the Guinness world record by calculating Pi to 31 trillion digits, adding more than nine million digits to the previous record, set in 2016.

Iwao used a whopping 170 terabytes of data for her calculation – the same size as the entire print collection of the Library of Congress.

So why Pi? Iwao called it “one of the most important constants in mathematics”, adding “We use Pi for everything in our daily lives”.
