Grocery Chain to Deliver Food by Driverless, Robotic Cars

As the world continues moving toward a Jetsons-like future, the Kroger supermarket chain has announced it’s testing a new service that will deliver groceries to customers’ homes — in driverless, robotic cars.

The grocery store giant plans to kick off the pilot program this Spring at two of its Houston stores. Initially, the delivery vehicles — modified Priuses — will be manned to make sure the deliveries go as planned. But rep Dave Ferguson says human-free vehicles should be on the road within weeks of the launch.

After placing an order online, a customer will be given a special code that can be used to open a compartment on the vehicle once it arrives. The price for the delivery will be $5.95.
