Philippines Withdraws from ICC

On Sunday, the Philippines officially withdrew from the International Criminal Court.

The move comes one year after Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte announced that it would be leaving the ICC.

Last year, the ICC announced it was investigating allegations of crimes against humanity and mass murder during the Duterte administration’s “war on drugs.”

The move to officially withdraw came after the Philippine Supreme Court turned down a requested injunction by a group of human rights activists, Time magazine reports.

A lawyer for rights activists called the ICC the country’s last resort.
