Miami Deploys Armored Riot Squads to Monitor Spring Breakers

While students on spring break have a long tradition of getting out of hand, a number of incidents that have occurred in Miami Beach this year has prompted officials to revamp the beach community’s policing policy mid-stream.

Effective this weekend, armored riot squads will patrol Ocean Drive in search of drug and alcohol violators, police announced. Additional officers will also scour the beaches on ATVs to break up crowds before they get too wild. The changes will raise Miami’s cost of spring break management from $1.1 million to $1.5 million.

The security overhaul follows what the Miami Herald calls a “particularly egregious” start to this year’s spring break.
