Former Volkswagen CEO Martin Winterkorn has been charged in connection with the automaker’s emissions-cheating scandal.

Back in 2015, Volkswagen admitted to using software to ‘cheat’ emissions testing and make their vehicles seem cleaner than they were. The scam had allegedly been going on since 2006, and German prosecutors say Winterkorn knew about it as early as 2014 but did nothing.

Winterkorn is one of five people charged in connection with the scandal and is facing charges including fraud and embezzlement. Last year, he was indicted by U.S. authorities for wire fraud, conspiracy, and violating the Clean Air Act.
