A Colorado teen has been slapped with nearly $20,000 in fines and could lose hunting privileges in 47 states after wildlife authorities say he illegally killed a moose and left it behind.

Another hunter found the animal’s remains and tipped off Colorado Parks and Wildlife. Investigators found boot tracks and recovered a .270 caliber round, Fox News reports.

19-year-old Callan Hyatt admitted to authorities that he mistakenly shot the animal while Elk hunting – saying the moose was too far away to clearly identify. He pleaded guilty to several misdemeanor charges in August.

According to CPW Officer Jeff Behncke, mistakes happen and Hyatt might have only faced a little more than $70 in fines had just he followed the proper regulations for shooting the wrong species.
