Chet Coppock Dead at 70

(CHICAGO) — Sports talk fans, Notre Dame sports fans and many in Chicago are taking to social media to remember Chet Coppock and offer condolences to his family. Coppock was a passenger in a vehicle crash April 11 near Hilton Head, S.C. He passed away from his injuries Wednesday.
His daughter Lyndsey Coppock took to Facebook.
“We lost our father, Chet Coppock, on April 17th due to complications from injuries he sustained in a car accident outside Hilton Head, SC. His passing is untimely, unexpected and painfully sad, but all we can do at this time is remember how lucky we were to have such a unique and creative trailblazer help shape into the adults we know he was so incredibly proud of.
Our father’s wishes were to have a memorial service for friends and family to reflect on good times and to laugh, sharing memories of the past. When we have those details we will share them as soon as possible.
Life is too short and you are never promised another day. Tell your friends and family you love them, you never know when your last moments with them will be. We love you, Dad, and we are so proud of you.”
Coppock worked in print, radio and TV, having been a sports anchor in the 1980’s on WMAQ-TV and later covering Notre Dame football, in part, on WLS-AM 890.
His work, spanning decades, included stops in New York, Chicago and Indianapolis.
“I consider him one of the best sports personalities that I’ve ever been associated with,” ESPN analyst Lee Corso tells WLS. “Chet and I did a TV show in Indianapolis when I was the head coach at Indiana and I loved every minute of it but most of all, I loved being around him. He was just an absolutely wonderful human being.”
A colorful career, Coppock was also involved in covering the Roller Derby and WWF wrestling.
Coppock was 70 years old. A memorial service is being planned.
