Mississippi Offers New Flag Design On License Plates

Those who’d like to show off their Mississippi pride with their cars but don’t want to fly the stars and bars are now in luck as the state has approved a new license plate design.

Thanks to a bill signed last week by Gov. Phil Bryant, vehicle tags can feature a new flag created by artist Laurin Stennis, which removes the Confederate symbol.

Mississippi is the only US state that still uses the image known as the Southern Cross. Many consider it to be racist, while others believe it to be part of their history.

Plates will start showing up on cars this July. Drivers will plunk down $33 for the privilege, with the fee funding the Museum of Mississippi History and the Mississippi Civil Rights Museum.
