(CRYSTAL LAKE, Ill.) — The parents of missing 5-year-old Andrew “AJ” Freund Jr. have been arrested after officials discovered the child’s body Wednesday morning. Sheriff Jim Black delivered the news Wednesday afternoon at the Crystal Lake City Hall.

“To AJ, we know that you are at peace playing in heaven’s playground and are happy you no longer have to suffer.”

Officials say the family was known to police. AJ was last seen Wednesday night with his parents claiming he had gone missing overnight, but police say there was no evidence of an abduction.

Black says the parents, Joann Cunningham and Andrew Freund senior, were interviewed overnight after an analysis of cell phone data.

The body was found in a shallow grave in a remote area of Woodstock.

Both parents have been arrested and face multiple charges including first degree murder.

The cause of death is pending an autopsy by the McHenry County coroner.
