(WOODSTOCK, Ill.) — Bond has been set at $5 million each for the Crystal Lake parents accused of killing their 5-year-old son A.J.

Joann Cunningham cried as the charges against her and Andrew Freund Sr. were read at the McHenry County Jail Thursday morning. In laying out the allegations in bond court, prosecutors say AJ Freund died after he was forced into a cold shower for an extended period of time and then beat.

His body was then wrapped in plastic and laid in a shallow grave in a remote area of Woodstock.

Freund and Cunningham are both charged with first-degree murder, aggravated battery, aggravated domestic battery, and failure to report a missing child or child death. Freund was also charged with concealment of a homicidal death.

Sheriff Jim Black said Wednesday that cell phone data helped in the case.

Both are being appointed public defenders. AJ’s younger brother has been placed in protective custody.

Freund and Cunningham are due back in court on Monday. An autopsy for AJ was scheduled for Thursday.
