Alabama Senate Approves Bill that Bans Abortions – Even for Rape Victims

The Alabama State Senate has approved a near-total abortion ban that provides no concessions for victims of rape or incest.

The controversial bill, known as the “Human Life Protection Act,” was approved late Tuesday in a 25-to-6 vote. It now heads to the office of Governor Kay Ivey, whose signature is needed for it to become law. The Republican governor has not commented on the legislation.

If approved, the law will ban all abortions in the state except when it’s “necessary in order to prevent a serious health risk” to the woman, the bill reads. It also makes performing an abortion a Class A felony, punishable by up to 99 years in prison. Abortion rights advocates have said they’ll challenge the bill in court if Ivey signs it into law.
