GA Governor Vetoes Bill that Would Have Given Recess to Students

A bill that would have required Georgia schools to provide recess for elementary school kids has been shot down by the governor.

Georgia House Bill 83 was vetoed Wednesday by Governor Brian Kemp, who said he believes recess should be left in the hands of local school boards. “While I support expanded recess opportunities for Georgia’s students, I am a firm believer in local control, especially in education,” Kemp said.

Kemp’s decision came after the popular bill was overwhelmingly supported by other state politicians. The Georgia House of Representatives approved it 160-to-11, while the State Senate gave it a 48-to-4 approval.
