Missouri moves one step closer to joining the list of US states with restrictive abortion laws on the books, as a bill limiting the procedure to 8 weeks of pregnancy passed the Senate early Thursday.
The 24-10 vote by Republicans now sends the legislation to the Republican-led House, then to Republican Governor Mike Parson.
Parson, a supporter of the bill, feels it could make The Show Me State “one of the strongest pro-life states in the country.”
The proposal does make exceptions for medical emergencies, but not in the case of rape or incest. Doctors convicted of violating the law could face five to 15-year prison sentences.
