(SPRINGFIELD, Ill.) — Illinois Gov. J.B. Pritzker is activating the National Guard to help with flooding conditions downstate.

He says conditions are becoming more severe by the day following rain over the last 12 weeks which is swelling rivers and streams. Pritzker says the situation in the state is serious and for some small communities it’s getting worse.

“If there is a river in Illinois it’s flooded,” Pritzker said Thursday. “Our crests are at record highs, levees are saturated and the rain is showing no signs of slowing down. The situation is urgent in a number of communities.”

The governor says 200 members have been immediately deployed along the Illinois and Mississippi rivers with another 200 on standby.
