Visitors to Chicago’s Willis Tower received a scare Monday night when the building’s glass skydeck suddenly shattered beneath their feet.
The incident occurred on the former Sears Tower’s observation deck on the 103rd floor. Video captured by a visitor shows the glass floor, designed to give visitors the sensation of floating high about the Windy City, splintered into thousands of pieces.
Willis officials say part of the skydeck that broke was actually its protective layer, which covers the actual skydeck glass. They say visitors were never in any danger because “the protective layer did what it was supposed to do.”
