(CHICAGO) — There is a renewed effort to try and secure an early release for imprisoned ex-Gov. Rod Blagojevich.

Jesse Jackson is asking President Trump to pardon Blagojevich , who is serving time for trying to sell a U.S. Senate seat.

In a letter to the president dated last Friday, Jackson and his son Jessie Jackson Jr., who also spent time in prison on fraud charges and misspending campaign cash, said, “We stand with his family as they seek a full pardon for a father and husband that has served most of a sentence that was far longer than the offense deserved.”

Back in May of 2018 Trump had considered commuting Blagojevich’s sentence, prompting his wife to do a media blitz on Fox News. Later in December the president tweeted that the situation was “very sad.”

The president got to know Blagojevich after the then impeached governor was a 2010 contestant on “Celebrity Apprentice.”

Blagojevich is halfway through his 14 year sentence.
