Acquitted of murder in stillbirth

A Latin American woman tried – twice – for aggravated murder after delivering a stillborn baby was acquitted Monday.

Evelyn Hernandez was convicted of the crime three years ago after her delivery in El Salvador. Her pregnancy, the result of rape by a gang member. She said she didn’t realize she was pregnant until 32-weeks.

Prosecutors alleged the infant died of asphyxiation and had meconium in its lungs. Meconium is an infant’s first bowl movement. It can sometimes mix with amniotic fluid in the womb and cause complications.

The 30-year prison sentences of three other woman convicted of abortion crimes were also recently commuted by El Salvador’s Supreme Court.
