The accused gunman in the El Paso Walmart shooting that left 22 people dead has pleaded not guilty to the crime.

Patrick Crusius, 21, entered the plea Thursday in El Paso Judicial District Court. During the proceeding, he said only four words: “not guilty” and “yes sir,” when the judge asked if he’d pronounced his name correctly.

The appearance marked Crusius’ first court appearance since the massacre, which also left dozens of people injured. Afterwards, he reportedly told investigators he’d set out to “kill as many Mexicans” as he could. Prosecutors are seeking the death penalty.
