North Pole Not Cold Enough For Ice Sculptures

While Christmas might be celebrated at the North Pole year-round, the annual Ice Sculpture park won’t be opening this time; it’s just too warm.

For the first time in the event’s 14 year history, ice wasn’t properly able to form in the Alaskan town, leaving nothing to carve and nowhere to skate.

Rick Thoman, a climate specialist at the International Arctic Research Center in Fairbanks, reveals that temperatures in North Pole were 8-degrees higher than normal. Then when it did get cold, snow fell, slowing the ice.

But Thoman doesn’t believe climate change is the cause, instead saying, “Is this another one of a series of warm winters in Alaska that are part of our changing climate? You bet.”
