Flesh-Eating Bacteria Deaths Linked To Heroin Use In San Diego

Health officials in San Diego County say seven people have died from flesh-eating bacteria linked to heroin use.

The victims died from myonecrosis, an infection that can be caused by injections of black tar heroin. Nine victims total were hospitalized in October and November.

Black tar heroin is cheaper to produce than ‘white powder’ heroin and even riskier for drug users. It’s typically imported from Mexico and is more prevalent in the western U.S.
