With scores of koalas killed in the bushfires burning across Australia, the animals could potentially be classified as an endangered species.

Experts believe that up to 30 percent of the population on the mid-north coast of New South Wales may have been wiped out, in what Environment Minister Sussan Ley calls an “extraordinary hit”.

According to the Sydney Morning Herald , Ley has announced a $50 million funding package on Monday to help restore their natural habitat.

Estimates now say the months-long crisis has killed more than 1 billion animals across the country.
