Our World at War: Photojournalism Beyond the Frontlines (Arts and Entertainment)

Attend this free photo exhibit at the Loyola University Chicago School of Communication. Witness the emotional impact of war through the lenses of award-winning photojournalists Ron Haviv, Antonin Kratochvil, Christopher Morris, James Nachtwey and Franco Pagetti. This exhibit is hosted by the Greater Chicago Red Cross, presented by the International Committee of the Red Cross, in collaboration with VII Photo Agency and the Newseum.
Little Builders Exhibition arrives at Kohl Children’s Museum (Museum)

“Construction” starts at Kohl Children’s Museum of Greater Chicago on Tuesday, Oct. 6, 2009 with the arrival of the Little Builders exhibition. Aimed at teaching children the ropes of a builder’s world, the new science exhibition uses interactive activities and construction scenarios to teach children about building. Little Builders encourages children to use the tools offered in their own unique way, giving them the chance to grow creatively and allowing them to personalize their experience. As part of the Little Builders exhibition, children are given the opportunity to dress in a hard hat and orange safety vest before entering the exhibit. For added fun and a more genuine role-playing experience, children are also given a push cart and orange cones to use during their time in the exhibit. The exhibition closes Sunday, Jan. 10, 2010.

Tales from the Field with Jeff Corwin (Arts and Entertainment)

This family-friendly and educational experience kicks off with video highlights from Jeff Corwin’s adventures around the world, followed by personal stories and visits from special animal guests including an American Alligator, Marine Toad, Gabon Viper, Albino Burmese Python and an Alligator Snapping Turtle weighing nearly 100 pounds. Corwin will invite audience members on stage to interact with the animals while he discusses the unique challenges each species faces in the wild. Corwin concludes the show with an audience Q&A that is sure to inspire the audience to become more aware of the threats to wildlife and to the environment. Dinner & a Movie (Fundraiser)

The Tinley Park Public Library will host our second annual Dinner and a Movie on Saturday, October 17 at 6:00 p.m. This year we will present a master of suspence Alfred Hitchcock’s thriller featuring Ingrid Bergman and Gregory Peck. The dinner will be catered by local favorite, Frankfort’s Caffé Milan, and will include pulled pork, lasagna, spinach-strawberry salad with fresh strawberry vinaigrette, fruit salad and a variety of delicious homemade desserts. Tickets are $25 each and will be available at the Patron Services desk beginning September 21st. There will be a drawing for donated prizes at the event; prizes will be displayed in the library’s lobby prior to the event and drawing tickets may be purchased at that time, as well as at the event.
