Attend this free photo exhibit at the Loyola University Chicago School of Communication. The School of the Art Institute of Chicago proudly hosts the Association for Computer Aided Design in Architecture’s 2009 international conference, ACADIA 09: reForm() Oct. 22–25. ACADIA 09:reForm() highlights include paper presentations by 40 top innovators in the fields of architecture, technology, engineering, art and design; workshops and panels; access to special exhibitions at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago; and public keynote lectures by Kai Strelkhe, Head of Design Technology, Herzog & de Meuron Architekten (Oct. 22 at 6 p.m.), Dr. Robert Aish, Director of Software Development, Autodesk (Oct. 23 at 6 p.m.) and Dr. Peter W. Singer, Senior Fellow and Director of the 21st Century Defense Initiative, the Brookings Institution (Oct. 24 at 6 p.m.). Little Builders Exhibition arrives at Kohl Children’s Museum (Museum)

“Construction” starts at Kohl Children’s Museum of Greater Chicago on Tuesday, Oct. 6, 2009 with the arrival of the Little Builders exhibition. Aimed at teaching children the ropes of a builder’s world, the new science exhibition uses interactive activities and construction scenarios to teach children about building. Little Builders encourages children to use the tools offered in their own unique way, giving them the chance to grow creatively and allowing them to personalize their experience. As part of the Little Builders exhibition, children are given the opportunity to dress in a hard hat and orange safety vest before entering the exhibit. For added fun and a more genuine role-playing experience, children are also given a push cart and orange cones to use during their time in the exhibit. The exhibition closes Sunday, Jan. 10, 2010.

The critically acclaimed Giordano Jazz Dance Chicago premieres three new works in their upcoming Fall engagement at the Harris Theater. The program for each evening will include a major new work choreographed by Philadelphia’s Rennie Harris, commissioned by GJDC for the company’s repertoire; the world premiere of a pas de deux “Gravity,” choreographed by GJDC company dancer Lindsey Leduc Brenner; the world premiere of “commonthread,” a new work by former GJDC company dancer Autumn Eckman set to an original music composition by Dan Myers and John Ovnik, and Myers; Tony Powell’s “Rapture” (2001) restaged by former GJDC dancer, Autumn Eckman and and selections from GJDC’s critically acclaimed repertoire to be announced.

Singer, songwriter and storyteller Arlo Guthrie brings four generations of his family’s folk history to the stage with Guthrie Family Rides Again at the McAninch Arts Center at College of DuPage, 425 Fawell Blvd. in Glen Ellyn. The eldest son of singer, songwriter and philosopher Woody Guthrie has been performing since age 13 and is best known for his landmark 1967 album “Alice’s Restaurant” and his cover of Steve Goodman’s “City of New Orleans.” Joined by Abe, Cathy, Annie, Sarah Lee Guthrie, Johnny Irion and the Guthrie kids, the group will perform Arlo’s standard tunes, as well as a selection of unpublished Woody Guthrie lyrics set to music by friends and family.Tickets to Guthrie Family Rides Again are $46 for adults, $44 for seniors and $36 for College of DuPage students and youth.
