Story by 89 WLS Reporter Bill Cameron
(CHICAGO) Ten years ago Saturday, then-mayor Richard Daley closed Meigs Field by ordering bulldozers to carve X’s in the runways at midnight.
At the time, Daley pretended he closed Meigs by the dark of the moon to prevent terrorists from using small planes to fly over downtown.
When the actor Harrison Ford called him on it, Daley said this.
“Well i don’t wanna call him elitist, but it is!” Daley said. “You know, he has a jet and all these planes and toys and he doesn’t understand that the economy is tough with people. That lakefront belongs to us! It doesn’t belong to him.”
And Daley eventually admitted that was the reason he carved X’s in the Meigs runways – in order to close it and extend the ring of park land around the lake.
