Story by 89 WLS Reporter Bill Cameron
(CHICAGO) Governor Quinn has halted state funding of United Neighborhood Organization Charter School construction because of allegations of insider contracting, but a heavyweight at City Hall is trying to get construction going again.
Quinn’s action has stopped construction on one of the new charter schools on the southwest side – the UNO Soccer Academy. The local alderman, Ed Burke, has a lot of influence and he’s trying to get state money flowing again.
Burke: The product they’ve created in those schools, in my opinion, is top rate and I want to see them continue to do the job they’ve been so successful in doing so far.
Cameron: But wasn’t it friends and family contracting?
Burke: Ah, I don’t know about that.
But Burke argues: punish the wrongdoers if there are any, not the kids who are supposed to start school there this summer.
