Story by 89 WLS reporter Bill Cameron
Another round of tough new gun laws was proposed today by Mayor Emanuel and other law enforcement officials.
What the mayor and the police superintendent and states attorney want to do is slap a three year minimum prison term on any felon caught carrying a gun. 5 years on repeat offenders. Then make them offenders serve 85% of their sentences.
None of them would say how to pay for locking up so many more bad guys for so much longer.
When the mayor was asked how could the state afford it he responded saying, "You ask how can you afford it? I say how can we afford not to."
States attorney Alvarez thinks taxpayers would support more spending to lock up gangbangers longer because it's a matter of public safety.
