Story by 89 WLS reporter Bill Cameron
(CHICAGO) The tax evasion trial of Cook County Commissioner Bill Beavers is underway in federal court.
89 WLS reporter Bill Cameron says Judge James Zagel has ruled that the Beavers jury will remain anonymous until the verditct to keep reporters away from them.
Beavers in the meantime says he intends to testify, which doesn't surprise defense attorney Sam Adam Jr.
"The irrepressible William Beavers is 100% ready to testify, wants to testify, and should it be necessary, he will," Adam said. "If he wants to testify I back him 100% on what his decision is, but it's a little to early to make that call."
Adam went on to say, "I learned my lesson the first time. You don't have to beat me two times in the head to know you don't promise it unless you have to, and we'll get to that later on."
Beavers says he wants to testify to tell the jury the feds are liars who wanted him to be a stool pigeon.
