The CTA will begin addressing some of the “slow zones’’ that occur along its north suburban Purple Line track by replacing 6,000 railroad ties, Pioneer Press is reporting.
CTA officials contacted Evanston about doing the work, according to Matt Swentkofske, the suburbs governmental affairs coordinator, said during brief presentation Monday to the Evanston City Council.
He characterized the work as a “heavy maintenance renewal project” to mitigate the slow zones along the line until the agency receives adequate funding to undertake major renewal.
The CTA will move from south to north on the project, starting in May with Mulford Street to South Boulevard in May, and ending in October and November with Isabella Street to Linden Street in Wilmette.
The CTA defines ‘‘slow zones’’ as areas where trains are required to operate at slower-than-normal speeds due to track conditions. Slow zone elimination work typically involves replacing aging rail ties and tie plates, if not whole track replacement, the CTA said.
Thirty-eight percent of Evanston track falls in the slow zone category, according to the CTA’s April slow zone map. Last year’s viaduct replacement was aimed at addressing slow zones along the system.
The jobs with the loudest impact will take place earlier in the evening, which is a change from the CTA’s normal procedure, he said. Once construction crews leave an area, work will be done in that zone.
The CTA will distribute flyers to residents prior to work in affected neighborhoods.
