(CHICAGO) Cardinal Jorge Mario Bergoglio of Argentina has been elected the 266th pope. Bergoglio is 76-years-old.

Bergoglio is the first Jesuit pope, the first pope from South America and the first pope to come from outside Europe in more than 1000 years.

He was made a cardinal by Pope John Paul II in 2001, and was reportedly one of the frontrunners to be named pope in 2005.

He has chosen the name Pope Francis.

The announcement was made from the balcony of St. Peter's Basilica by French Cardinal Jean-Louis Tauran, the senior cardinal in the order of the deacons.

The announcement came just about an hour after white smoke could be seen rising from the Sistine Chapel and the bells of St. Peter's Basilica were heard ringing, signaling the election of a new pope.

The 115 cardinal electors began the conclave Tuesday, following the resignation of Benedict XVI, the first pontiff to resign in 600 years. At least two-thirds majority - 77 votes - was required to elect the next pope.
