Story by 89 WLS Reporter Bill Cameron
(CHICAGO) Cardinal George and a group of ministers called in reporters to oppose gay marriage legislation in Springfield.
At the Archdioses of Chicago, Cardinal George joined about a dozen African-American ministers to oppose what they call a redefinition of marriage. The cardinal thinks gay marriage is immoral.
"Not every love, not every friendship is marital," George said. "So you have to ask, as I think my brother pastors have asked, what is the nature of marriage? And that goes back to sexual expression that's based upon the complimentarity of men and women and is the way in which the future of the human race is assured, and that anything outside of that is morally wrong."
But the other side says gay marriage is not a religious issue, but a human rights issue.
