(WASHINGTON) Chicago Police Officer Del Pearson was in the group of nearly 50 officers being honored as the nation's best by the National Association of Police Organizations Saturday. The awards are through NAPO's TOP COPS Awards.
President Obama spoke at the White House and praised the officers for their work and for "who they are, what they're made of." He added we need to be "thankful to them not just today, but for the rest of their lives and recognizing the sacrifices not only they make, but their parents and spouses and kids who watch their loved ones go off and serve every day, knowing that there's real danger out there."
Officer Del Pearson was shot while responding to a call in March 2012. Police say he had chased Paris Sadler into a front yard; both opened fire and Sadler's shot hit Pearson in the chest. Pearson nearly died from the gunshot wound.
