A driver who hit a Chicago Police officer with her car during a traffic stop Monday night in the South Side Auburn Gresham neighborhood has been arrested.
The officer, a woman with at least five years on the force, is sitting up and talking at Northwestern Memorial Hospital, where she is being treated for non-life-threatening injuries, police News Affairs Officer Ron Gaines said.
The incident started about 9:10 p.m. in the 8300 block of South Kerfoot Avenue, when Gresham District police pulled over a vehicle for a traffic violation, police News Affairs Officer Hector Alfaro said.
As police approached, the woman driving hit the officer in the face then sped off, striking her with the vehicle and dragging her, Alfaro said.
Roughly a dozen police cars escorted the ambulance rushing the officer to the Streeterville neighborhood hospital.
“It could have been a lot worse,” said Gaines, speaking from the hospital Monday night.
Area South detectives are investigating, and charges are pending against the driver.
