(CHICAGO) A Chicago sailor was killed in the Bahamas while trying to help a woman who was being mugged.
The 34-year-old first mate was shot in the neck when he tried to stop the robbers from stealing a woman's jewelry on a Nassau street. Detectives say they have one person in custody, but are still looking for two other suspects.
Bruner was a special education teacher before he decided to follow his passion for sailing. He was first mate on the tall ship Liberty Chipper which was docked at Nassau. He had just got his captain's license.
His parents say Bruner never liked bullies "and so, this was what he would do." His father, Rick Bruner, continued, "Maybe we wish he had walked away...but if he had, he wouldn't have been the person we know."
The Bruners are making funeral arrangements fit for a man who loved the sea, "He'll be cremated, then one of the tall ships will scatter his ashes."
