In Washington, the Senate has just voted to end debate on President Obama's controversial choice of Chuck Hagel to be the next defense secretary.

During debate in the Senate, Republican Dan Coats of Indiana argued that Chuck Hagel is too weak on both defending Israel and standing up to Iran, “He has publicly stated that military action on Iran to stop Iran’s nuclear program is, and I quote, not viable, feasible or reasonable.  Not reasonable?”

Democrat Dick Durbin of Illinois countered this charge, “He is firmly committed to the president’s Iran strategy and he voted for many multi-lateral sanctions programs against their nuclear program.”

As for Republican Mark Kirk of Illinois, he did not participate in the debate, but opposes Hagel on the argument that he is too weak on Iran.
