(CHICAGO) In Washington, Senator Dick Durbin is in the middle of the debate going on in the Senate Judiciary Committee over the pending immigration reform bill.
Border states complain that the feds won’t let them go after illegal immigrants and so in the Senate immigration hearings, Iowa Senator Charles Grassley had this question for Ill. Senator Durbin.
Grassley: What in the bill would allow the states to control their own borders when the federal government doesn’t? If the federal government isn’t doing its job, then the citizens of that state have a right to be protected!
Durbin: I listen to your argument about the failings of our immigration system and it’s the most compelling argument for the passage of this legislation that I’ve ever heard as this immigration system has broken down so badly in this country.
Durbin said the pending bill gives states a big role if after five years the federal effort fails.
