(CHICAGO) Mayor Emanuel praised School CEO Barbara Byrd Bennett Thursday for standing up to CTU President Karen Lewis and her racism charges.
Mayor Emanuel said Bennett was “quite eloquent” standing up to Lewis on the charge of racist school closings, and went after the CTU’s silence on alternatives to the 54 closings.
The union’s lobbyist was caught flat-footed and went silent when asked for alternatives in a City Council committee Wednesday. Thursday, the mayor pounced.
“What I won’t accept is that when people are asked ‘what’s your alternative, what’s your idea’ and people are silent,” Emanuel said. “The status quo cannot handle silence.”
The mayor said the status quo is an absolutely unacceptable drop out rate of 56 percent.
