Story by 89 WLS Reporter Bill Cameron
(CHICAGO) At City Hall, Mayor Rahm Emanuel is taking aim at another big benefit for city workers.
The next city benefit Emanuel wants to phase out is subsidized health care for all but the oldest retired city workers.
City Hall says it can’t afford it and a key alderman, City Council Finance Committee Chairman Ed Burke is sounding like that’s right.
“It’s very, very, very, very expensive,” Burke said. “If there is indeed a replacement that can be made available from the Obamacare legislation, then I think that’s something that really needs to be explored. But the way it’s going now, the city doesn’t have the money to continue to fund these retiree benefits.”
But it’s a very emotional issue and there will be a hue and cry against this move.
