(WHEATON) A former west suburban high school counselor was sentenced to 30 days of work release for having a sexual relationship with a 16-year-old female student.

John Carbonaro, 35, must report to the DuPage County Jail at night and will be released in the mornings to go to work, DuPage County State’s Attorney’s office spokesman Paul Darrah said. The probation department will determine his work schedule.

Carbonaro, former guidance counselor at Naperville North High School, will work the 30 days in the Sheriff’s Work Alternative Program, which has jail inmates perform tasks such as cleaning roads, Darrah said.

In addition, he will be placed on sex offender probation for 30 days, and must register as a sex offender for the next 10 years, Darrah said.

Carbonaro pleaded guilty to felony criminal sexual abuse in January for having sexual contact with a Naperville North student in 2010 at his home while he worked as a counselor and coach at the school, officials said.
