Story by 89 WLS Reporter Bill Cameron
(CHICAGO) Down in Springfield, the Illinois House has approved medical marijuana and sent the issue to the State Senate.
It’s not legalization of pot, but with a doctor’s permission, medical patients in a lot of pain from one of 33 specific conditions could get up to two and a half ounces of medical marijuana every two weeks to relieve that pain.
During debate, Republican opponent Jim Sacia of Pecatonica told Democratic sponsor Lou Lang of Skokie that pot heads could get through that process.
Sacia: I absolutely believe that I could go to my doctor and go through my history of medical conditions and I could get medical marijuana under your bill.
Lang: Do you have any of those conditions today?
Sacia: I believe I do.
Lang: Then, maybe you need the product, sir!
Sacia: I’m doin’ well without it.
When the roll was called, it was close. Sixty votes needed, and the roll call was 61 to 57.
