Story by 89 WLS Reporter Bill Cameron
(CHICAGO) Friday afternoon, Chicago Teachers Union President Karen Lewis is attacking Mayor Rahm Emanuel for moving so quickly to close 54 schools.
Lewis says the thing that worries her most about the school closings is the danger kids will be exposed to crossing gang territories to attend new schools and the rival gang members in those schools.
She says the mayor is moving too fast.
Lewis: It’s just, okay, I got a idea! Let’s go do it! We gotta do it right now! It’s gotta be fast! And on! And on! Ya know, it’s just crazy to me. It is absolutely crazy.
Cameron: Well, as you know, Rahm is impatient.
Lewis: Okay, so? All right, and so peoples lives should be put on the line for his impatience? That’s nuts to me.
But the mayor says there’s a safe passage program in the works to make sure kids will be safe going to and attending what’s being called the welcoming schools.
You can hear the rest of the Karen Lewis interview on the “Connected to Chicago” podcast for Sunday, May 5.
