(KENTLAND, Ind.) A Kentland man is being held without bond for attempted murder and resisting law enforcement after allegedly stabbing an 8-year-old boy multiple times, police said.

Kentland Police officers and Fire Department personnel found Thomas Esmond, 66, at a home in the 200 block of North Sixth Street with the boy. Esmond told officers to shoot him and then fought with them before being subdued with a stun gun.

Marshal V.P. Lowe of the Kentland Police Department said the boy has been released from an Illinois hospital after being treated for multiple stab wounds on several areas on his body.

Esmond was treated at Jasper County Hospital and released. Police booked him into Newton County Jail.

Indiana State Police are assisting Kentland police with the investigation.
