(CHICAGO) A Northwest Side man is charged with murder and arson for allegedly setting a fire that fatally hurt his girlfriend Wednesday inside the Northwest Side apartment they shared.
Gregorio Carmona, 35, will appear in bond court later Sunday charged with first-degree murder and aggravated arson in connection with the fatal blaze in the 4800 block of North Kenneth Avenue, according to a release from police News Affairs.
Carmona allegedly used an accelerant to set the fire in the couple’s home about 10:15 p.m. Wednesday, police said.
Claudia Martinez, also 35, was taken to Loyola University Medical Center in Maywood following the blaze, where she died at 5:58 a.m. Thursday, according to the Cook County Medical Examiner’s office.
A Friday autopsy found that Martinez died of thermal injuries from an apartment fire and ruled her death a homicide, according to the medical examiner’s office.
Area North detectives and the police Bomb and Arson Unit are investigating.
