(CHICAGO) At City Hall, there was a City Council hearing on a new proposal to ban plastic bags in Chicago.
Too many plastic bags littering the streets, clogging the sewers, polluting waterways and the failure of recycling programs are the reasons why environmentalists are asking the aldermen to ban them in the city.
Abby Goldberg, the adorable child who persuaded Governor Pat Quinn to veto a pro-plastic bag statute, showed up with a bizarre-looking mannequin called the bag monster displaying all of the bags you use in one year.
“Sometimes kids can see the obvious solution because we’re not influenced by money or politics, but we cannot vote,” Goldberg said. “So it’s our job to tell adults who have greater influence to take action.”
The other side says a plastic bag ban would be bad for business and raise costs and the aldermen put off a vote on the issue.
