(CHICAGO) Chicago Police Superintendent Garry McCarthy announced Monday that Chicago Police have seized 1,999 firearms for the year to-date. This comes as part of the city's comprehensive policing strategy to target illegal firearms.
"It is encouraging to see a drop in the number of murders, shootings and overall crime in the City as a result of targeted initiatives, perseverance, and collaborative relationships with community leaders, aldermen, clergy and residents,” McCarthy said. “The reality of firearms still confronts officers and our communities far too often, and we need stronger laws to keep illegal guns off our streets, and to punish the dangerous criminals carrying them.”
In the first 15 weeks of 2013, Austin District officers have recovered 88 firearms, while shooting incidents have dropped 17 percent.
