Chicago Police are warning residents of a recent increase in motor vehicle thefts throughout the city.

The thieves use a “Slim Jim” device to enter a vehicle, and steal the vehicle or take personal items, according to an alert from Area Central detectives.

Vehicles have also been towed without authorization, the alert said.

Police advise drivers to parks cars in well lit areas, completely secure vehicles, and put away any visible items like cell phone or laptops.

Anyone with information about the thefts should call Area Central detectives (312) 747-8380.
