(CHICAGO) Governor Pat Quinn is in Chicago Saturday to sign a bill to crack down on violent flash mobs in Illinois. He will be signing it right on Michigan Avenue, where violent flash mobs have taken place in the past.
The bill targets the sort of violent acts Chicago saw on the Mag Mile last year where groups of teenagers and young adults attack pedestrians. These attacks are organized on sites like Twitter and Facebook.
This new bill will allow a judge to use a harsher penalty for anyone who organizes a violent flash mob using social media.
The bill passed in the Illinois House on May 10th with a vote of 102 to 6.
