
SANTA MARIA, Brazil (AP) - The worst fire of its kind in more than a decade is raising questions of whether Brazilian authorities are up to the task of ensuring safety in venues like nightclubs ahead of it hosting next year's World Cup and the 2016 Olympics.
The club in Santa Maria where 231 people died in a fire had no alarm, no extinguishers, no sprinklers and almost no escape.
