Mayor Emanuel's school board has voted to close 49 elementary schools and one high school program.
Noisy agitators disrupted the school board meeting many times, but once the last of them was pulled out by security, the mayor’s school chief Barbara Byrd Bennett countered them by quoting Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.
“Cowardice asks the question is it safe? Expediency asks the question is it political? Vanity asks the question is it popular? But Conscience asks the question is it right?”
And she persuaded the mayor’s school board it is right to close all of these schools. The Chicago Teachers Union disagrees and is in federal court with two suits to try to reverse this decision. It’s also beginning a campaign to defeat Mayor Emanuel in the 2015 election.
