Sleet, snow and freezing rain greeted commuters stuck in traffic Monday morning after a winter-weather advisory was issued for the Chicago region.

“Heavy sleet could fall through the mid-morning, creating slippery conditions and significantly impacting the morning commute,” according to an advisory issued by the National Weather Service early Monday.

The inclement weather is expected to stick around until about 11 a.m. according to the weather service.

Up to 1 inch of accumulated sleet and snow can be expected in some parts of Northern Illinois and Northwest Indiana, according to the weather service.

By 6:30 a.m., numerous spinouts and crashes were reported on major arterials and expressways, further increasing travel times.

Morning temperatures hovered just below freezing, but by mid-day they are expected to climb as high as 40 degrees.
